June 2005 FOP Meeting Minutes

Friends of Photography – June 9, 2005

Meeting Notes by Tammy Dohner

NEXT MEETING – SUNDAY, JULY 10, 3 PM. (Yes, a different day and time, and yes, a different place – it’s at Becky Keene’s house. A separate email will be issued with directions to her house.)

ATTENDANCE: Winnie, Marjory, Tony, Yvonne, Tammy D., Jim, Donna, Heidi, Becky, Amber, Greg, Kerrie. Special invited guest – Michael, who is new in town.

ABSENT: Alicia, David, Mitzi, Tammy C, Ruth, Jenny, Malcolm, Mark, Shane, Beverly, Larry, Rebecca.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1) Thursday, June 23 – There is an event at McGregor Park featuring fireworks – a great night photography opportunity with water, reflections, etc., etc. – bring the kids. (Or dump them off on a relative and go have fun there yourself. Yee-haw!)

2) Café 541 art changeover – per Tony, our exalted potentate of art-supporting restaurants – may occur at your convenience. If you have a photograph there, change it. If you don’t have a photo there, as my daddy would say, "carry your happy butt down there" and hang one.

3) Alter Gallery on Legion St – is accepting work for a new show on Sunday, June 12. Work accepted from 1-3. There is a fee of $3. An email with details was forwarded previously by your goddess of words.

4) Border’s Café – Winnie, our habitual award winner, is hanging a show there June 30. They always need work. The place can accommodate 9 or 10 prints. Good opportunity to showcase your stuff. Contact Kay Hester at Border’s. It’s easy. Really.

BUSINESS:

1) PICNIC – Our July meeting, a picnic with officer elections, is slated for Sunday, July 10 at Becky Keene’s. Spouses are welcome to attend. Becky, our high priestess of culinary delights, will prepare ribs and chicken.

ACTION: Everyone please decide what you will bring to the picnic. Some sort of email will be circulated to sign up for side dishes and desserts. Another email will be forthcoming with directions to Becky’s house. (All this “forthcoming email” stuff sounds a whole lot like procrastination, and I’m not clear on the identities of some the magical sprites who will allegedly be issuing these emails.)

2) PHOTO SHOOT: Donna, our land baroness of the 100 acre woods, has offered use of her property for a photo shoot. DATE: Saturday, June 25. TIME: meet at 9:45; begin shooting at 10. Donna, who seems to have blessedly escaped the sudden procrastination epidemic, has already emailed directions to her place and suggestions for attire.

ACTION: Go there. Remember this is in a wooded area, and heed Donna’s expert advice about bug repellent, leg coverage, creek stomping shoes, etc. (Seriously.) Shoot photos and bring your prints to the picnic.

3) OFFICER ELECTIONS: The July meeting is our election day. Nominations, slated for the June meeting, did not actually take place. (More procrastination? Cripes! What are we turning into?) Nominations will take place by email. (We are going to burn up cyberspace in a blaze of email!)

ACTION: Respond to the emails about nominations. Greg claims “it only takes FIVE seconds” to respond to an email. Try to prove him wrong by getting it done in, say FOUR seconds. Think of the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel.

- Greg, our fearless leader and star of the local stage, is in “Beauty and the Beast” at the Roxy, which opens the beginning of May. Tickets are available now. Round up your young ‘uns and go! Borrow a kid if you feel you can’t attend without them. (But do not -- I repeat -- do not -- get all Michael Jackson-y on the kid thing.) Greg says he’s a clock in this one?! (I’m not familiar with the story – but hey, I’ve appeared on stage as a sun ray, a dust mote, and lava, so being a clock actually sounds logical to me.)

BUSINESS:
1) MONEY: Final outstanding dues were paid at meeting, bringing our balance to $1,098.15.
2) SCHOLARSHIP: We must issue a check to fund The Friends of Photography – Carlos B. Brewer Memorial Scholarship Fund at Austin Peay. Current balance in scholarship the account held at APSU is $289.00. Previous scholarship awards:

b. 2003/04 $250.00
c. 2002/03 $250.00 split over 2 semesters

ACTION: Suggestion to increase scholarship amount. Concern expressed about ability to maintain the increased amount in the future, and whether it’s better to hold at $500 per year than to have to decrease it later. MOTION, VOTE in FAVOR to maintain scholarship at $500 ($250 per semester). A check for $250 will be issued to APSU to fully fund a $500 scholarship for 2005/06.

3) SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT: Mitzi met the scholarship recipient, who would like to meet us! Caitlyn will be our guest at the next meeting and will bring work to share with us.

4) RIVERS & SPIRES POSTER: The DAC printed a poster listing all art events during Rivers & Spires, which includes a listing for our Front Page Deli show.

ACTION: MOTION, VOTE in FAVOR of contributing $25 to the DAC for the cost of poster production.

5) NEXT SHOW: “Shadow Land” is scheduled for September – October at the L&N Train Station. There are two rooms to hang in. Each photographer will have room for 2 pieces. This show is all Black & White (film or digital) and features shadows (as suggested by the title!). More details later.

6) WORKSHOP: The figure study workshop is Saturday, April 9 at 9 am. Supply lists and directions to Beverly’s studio were distributed. Participant cost is $10, and may be more if a bunch of us forget to show up – the bottom line – the nude model is guaranteed $100 for her bravery. Bring any cool props you may have (fabrics, objects, etc.). Coffee, sweets, cheese and fruit will be provided.

ACTION: MOTION, VOTE in FAVOR of reimbursing reasonable amounts for workshop snacks.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Review / discussion of work from lighting assignment.
Figure study workshop participants should bring prints to the next meeting. (We probably need some group darkroom time here so we aren’t arrested for trying to have nude photos developed at a lab!!!! Just a paranoid thought.)

Operators are standing by.] Five people still owe dues for 2004-05.

2) WEBSITE: If you haven’t already, please submit images to Larry for your individual photo gallery.

Greg has promised (threatened?) to visit the home of any member who needs assistance in scanning, posting, or otherwise making images ready for their website gallery.

Larry the Web Guru says the classified ads will be up in about a week. Reminder – the classified section is available to post equipment you want to sell, as well as equipment you want to buy. The Web Guru also says the web crawlers and bots are starting to pick up on the site, which means more visits.

Bio sheets were handed out. Please list any special interest, areas of work, etc. the bios will be linked to individual galleries once more are submitted. We’d like to post photos of members with the bios. (If you are really camera shy, get creative, dig up a photo of your pet iguana or your favorite stick figure drawing.)

Web Goddess Amber asked for any cool links to other websites that we can link to from our site – things like photo supplies, frames, etc. - that would be of interest / value to other members. Please send them to her.

3) WORKSHOP I: The computer workshop is still a possibility. It will cover various photo-related topics/issues and Photoshop. With the existing university class schedules, the only available time to use the equipment is a Saturday. TENTATIVE DATE / TIME: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 9-NOON. We must be finished and gone from the computer lab by 2:00. There is no fee. Bring a CD or Zip Disk with images. Equipment is Mac.

4) WORKSHOP II: A figure study workshop is in the works – most likely on a Saturday. The studio space is small, so group size will be limited to about 10 photographers. Yes, “figure study” means the model will be nekkid. Malcolm and Mitzi are securing a model – the rate is about $100 for a ½ day, the cost of which would be divided amongst the participants. FORMAT: Continuous lighting -- B&W is recommended. General principles of posing and lighting will be covered. Bring ideas you may have. The workshop may be split into a “learning” component and a “shooting” component. Details TBA.

5) THE BIG FOP SHOW at DAC: Our exhibit Abstracts is here!

PLACE: Downtown Artists Co-op (DAC) Gallery, Franklin St.

WORK DUE: Monday, February 14, 3-6 pm. Pieces can be delivered early – Beverly will be working at the Gallery on Saturday, Feb 12 if you want to drop work off then. BUT, come the 14th at 6 pm – “If it ain’t there then, it ain’t in.” Show will be hung Tuesday, February 15.

PREPARATION: Use WHITE mats and BLACK frames.

Please label your work on the back with title, your name, medium (i.e. silver gelatin print, Polaroid emulsion transfer, digital image, etc.), and sales price. This information will be used in the exhibit listing.

Show tasks:

Tammy D. is prepping the item numbers for the works.

Tammy C. will type the exhibit list and make copies.

PRICING / SALES: The DAC Gallery will receive a 20% commission on sales of works in the show. (FYI -- This is a very reasonable commission.) Historically, artists have donated all or part of the sales price of works from the shows to the scholarship fund. Suggested contribution to scholarship fund is at least 20%. Please consider the commission and donation when you price your work.

RECEPTION: Thursday, February 17, 5-8 pm.

Postcard invitations have been mailed from the DAC mailing list. Additional cards were distributed at the meeting.

GALLERY TALK: Thursday, March 3, 5:30 (First Thursday Art Walk). Please attend, and be prepared to discuss your work. Please bring a snack or beverage. It is customary to serve refreshments during First Thursday Events – and with F&M covering our big reception, and the DAC allowing use of their mailing list, it’s the least we can do to repay the hospitality and support we are receiving for this exhibit.

END OF SHOW / WORK PICK-UP: Sunday, April 3 (Time TBA). Winnie and Mark have volunteered to staff the gallery for pick-up.

6) NEXT SHOW: FALL. We know, we know. We haven’t even put Abstracts on the walls yet, and we’re talking another show, BUT, L&N Train Station is available for September and October – there are two big rooms there. We have had some terrific shows there in the past. ACTION: We will need to let the person scheduling shows if we want the slot, which means we will need to decide soon. Food for thought: Our fearless leader suggests our next show be all Black and White.

If you have photos from our recent (and still lingering in random spots in spite of 63 degree temps) snowfall/ice blizzard, please send them to Larry for a Snow Gallery on our site. MEETING ADJOURNED.

December 2004 FOP Meeting Minutes

There are no meeting minutes for December. We were to busy having fun at the Christmas party. But here are a few informal reminders that have been passed around since the November meeting.

Dear FOP --

Here is another local exhibition opportunity for solo or small group shows -- the news comes from Tony Centonze, a member of FOP, who, along with his wife Lori, owns Cafe 541, which regularly provides space for exhibits by local artists. Tony estimates there is room for 25 - 40 pieces at the very-soon-to-be-opened new Cafe on Franklin St. (And many thanks to Tony and Lori for being such supporters of the local arts scene!) -- If you are interested in this, I suggest you contact Tony directly. -- Tammy D.

The Composition Assignment, AT THE RIGHT, is due at January's meeting.

By a vote of 16 yes, 3 no and 3 unanswered. Funds will be used to pay for food at the Party on Tuesday. Tony has arranged to meet costs at around 5 or 6 $ per person for food. He is planning on serving their Gourmet Pizza. If you DO NOT prefer that, other items on the menu are available.
Drinks are on your own and please remember the waitress at the end.

If you want to have your own gallery of photos, please send Larry a couple.....they must be jpeg, 72 dpi, no larger than about 5x7.) He will try to schedule a "scanning time" at his house, where we will scan prints, negatives or if necessary shoot your image with a digital camera to get it posted. If you can't make it out to his house Amber is also available to scan images 11x8.5 or smaller or to digitally photograph work during the day.
If you have won any recents awards, received honors, shows etc, please forward that to Larry.

November 2004 FOP Meeting Minutes
Friends of Photography – November 11, 2004
Meeting Notes by Tammy Dohner

NOTE: OUR NEXT MEETING IS OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY – TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7, AT CAFÉ 541. (Yes, that’s TUESDAY. No, it’s not a typo.) More info below.

ATTENDANCE: Yvonne, Kerrie, Larry, Alicia, Winnie, Beverly, Heidi, Jim, Greg, Tammy D., Malcolm, Mitzi, Marjory, David, Tony, Amber, Ruth
(plus visiting guest Whitney of Washington, DC, in town to see Malcolm & Mitzi).

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1) Welcome to all, and please remember your veterans.
2) Becky Keene had foot surgery recently and can’t drive yet.
3) ALTER GALLERY is a new gallery above Neblett’s Framing. They had an auction on November 4 and raised $1500 for gallery track lighting.
4) ROXY: Images come down the 20th or 21st.
5) FRONT PAGE DELI: There is a stack of images from the Deli show at Greg’s house. He is now withholding food and water and they are starving. If you didn’t pick your prints up from the show, commence self-flagellation and arrange ransom with Greg immediately. COMMENTS relayed to Greg by viewers of the show included praise for the diversity of work and the presentation. A new show opens at the Deli on the 13th – work by APSU students. (Note: Glenn at Frame Maker says the work he’s been matting for this show is terrific.)
6) WORKSHOP on Oct 30 went great. The only complaint was that is was too cold in the facility. The big mystery was how to adjust the heating/cooling – Greg looked in all the logical places. A survey will be issued to participants to help us plan future workshops.
7) WEBSITE volunteers were asked to speak with Greg after meeting.
8) LARRY SAFKO has an opening on Tuesday, November 16, 6:30 at Café 541 for the latest showing of his body of work TOADAL VISION. A television show will film the work on Nov. 20.
9) DAC HOLIDAY BAZAAR is Sat., Dec 4 from 10-4 and Sun., Dec 5 from 1-5 in the DAC Gallery on Franklin AND in the vacant storefront next door to the DAC. This year’s setup is different – there will be a cash register at each building – everything must be labeled and priced, and all purchases will go through the register. There will be an 80/20 split for everybody. DAC will pay artists after the event. Artists must supply and staff their own tables. The table fee is $25 for individual artists, and groups such as FOP, ARTZ will have space for free. FOP has been offered the concession table as in the past – this means we would provide food and beverages for sale and keep the proceeds. In 2003, we made $64.35 from the sale (over 2 days). In 2002, we made $42.50 (event was 1 day).

BUSINESS
1) FOP MONEY
a. RECEIPTS: Please give Tammy D. (that’s me) any receipts for expenses from the workshop. In the future, before spending club money, please notify Greg first (email is okay). We’re not being jerks, just following proper procedures for the oversight of group funds!

Work due -- Feb 14.
Hanging -- Feb 15.
Reception -- Feb. 17.
We’ll know space allocation, sizes and number of pieces and other details by December.

3) DECEMBER MEETING: Traditionally, our December meeting is a Holiday Party with a card exchange. Past parties were held at a member’s home, but we’re a larger group now. Tony offered use of Café 541 for the party.

BIG FOP SHO @ THE DAC

Exhibition details

"Abstracts"

Thursday, February 17 through Saturday, April 2

Reception: Thursday, February 17, 5:00 to 8:00

Artists' Talk: Thursday, March 3, 5:30 (First Thursday Art Walk)

DAC hours: Wednesday 11- 4, Thursday through Saturday 12 - 8

Preparation of pieces:

_black frames
_white mats
_hanging wire attached to back
_info card attached to back with:

title
your name
medium price

Number of pieces:

Keep in mind that the gallery is relatively small, and we want the photographs to have breathing room. We don't want to hang pieces one over the other (unless, possibly, they are quite small, like 8 X 10 frame size).

Note: These are frame sizes

2 16 X 20 pieces
3 11 X 14 pieces
4 8 X 10 pieces

These limits are based on the linear footage of the gallery (119 feet) and 25 potential contributors. Each person will have 57 inches of wall.

However, we may not have that many people showing . . .

Therefore, you may bring an extra piece or two (labeled extra), and we will hang some of these if space permits.

If you want to show a piece larger than 16 X 20, let Malcolm know (glassm@midsouth.net), and he'll figure the limits.

Deadlines

We will stick to these deadlines, so give yourself plenty of time.

Delivery: Monday, February 14, from 3:00 to 6:00 at DAC Gallery

If it ain't there then, it ain't in.

Pick-up: Sunday, April 2, from 2:00 to 5:00

Work not picked up at that time will be stored in the back room at the DAC.

January assignment:

Composition: Texture, Shape, Color, and Form

Because our next show at the DAC is entitled ABSTRACTIONS we need to start thinking and shooting with that in mind. Abstraction can be tricky because so many of us are not used to looking at a subject in an abstract way. So that is the callenge--to start looking at subject matter from a different point of view. Using a roll of 36 exposures B&W or color film try using the following elements of design/composition.

1. Shoot 3 shots using REPEATING PATTERNS

2. Shoot 3 shots using CIRCLES OR CIRCULAR PATTERNS.

3. Shoot 3 shots using TRIANGULAR SHAPES

4. Shoot 3 shots that contain LINES

5. Shoot 3 shots that contain TEXTURES.
